OToole Lab News

We have just returned from the first annual O'Toole lab retreat which we are calling "Moosilauke May-Hem" because it takes place in May at the Moosilauke Ravine Lodge in the White Mountains. The log cabin lodge opened in 1939 and it has a large common room with a fireplace. In addition to science, we had a great meal out and an 8 mile hike up snowy trails to the top of Mt. Moosilauke (~4800 ft). A couple of pictures from the retreat are below.

And we had a special treat. A group of crew members of the Space Shuttle were visiting the Dartmouth campus and stopped by the lodge for hiking and dinner. We had a chance to have dinner and hangout with members of various Space Shuttle crews, including our own Jay Buckey, mission specialist on a Space Shuttle mission!

Michael Zegans, MD, recently received a K08 grant (which supports research training for physicians) to carry out a joint project in my lab and in the lab of Ron Taylor. He will be based in my lab and study the role of biofilms and pili-mediated attachment in infections of the eye. Mike has been working in my lab for ~1 year and has already begun to establish several active research projects.
Rob Shanks, currently a graduate student in the Sackler School of Biomedical Sciences at Tufts Medical School, will be joining the lab this summer as a post-doc. He will be studying the genetic basis of biofilm antibiotic resistance and his work will be supported by a grant from Microbia, Inc (Microbia). Microbia is a biotech company in Cambridge, MA interested in novel anti-biofilm therapies.
