My colleague, collaborator and mentee Juliette Madan, M.D., received the prestigious Harry Shwachman Cystic Fibrosis Clinical Investigator Award from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The award provides salary support for three years and is for promising, clinically trained physicians who are committed to developing their CF-related research. Juliette's interests include studying the microbiome of patients with CF.

Kelly McHugh, a Dartmouth College undergraduate in the lab, was awarded a Richter research fellowship to work full time in the lab during the spring quarter. Congratulations! She'll be working with Alicia Ballok, a Ph.D. student int he group studying how the microbial pathogen
Pseudomonas aeruginosa causes disease in the context of lung infections.
The newest member of our group is Jyoti Graber. She is a Hanover High School student, who is starting out washing dishes and making media, and she'll also be picking up a science project this term.

We just held our annual Microbiology and Molecular Pathogenesis Program (
M2P2) Retreat at the Lake Morey Resort in Vermont (~30 minutes from Hanover, pictured). The retreat brought together ~80 microbiologists, about half of those from Dartmouth and the other half from institutions across northern New England, including UNH, U. of Maine, UVM, UMAss Medical Center, Bowdoin College, Smith College and New England College. Attendees included faculty, post-docs, graduate students, research associates and undergraduates. In addition to the 15 talks, we had a poster session with 15+ posters. We also held three career development seminars on the following topics: (1) Managing a Lab, (2) Preparing a Course, (3) Commercializing Basic and Translational Science. As usual, it was a great opportunity to network, build collaborations and get feedback on your science. The annual retreat is supported by funds from Dartmouth.

Dae-Gon Ha, a Ph.D. student in the lab was recently accepted into the Bridge Program at the Tuck School of Business here at Dartmouth. Tuck is one of the top-ranked business schools in the world (#1 ranking in the Economist magazine), and participates in a variety of programs including our MBA/PhD joint degree program. The Bridge Program at Tuck is an intensive 4-week summer course teaching some basic business skills. including working in a team. Dae-Gon's classmates will include students from a variety of professions and coming from all over the world to spend a few weeks in Hanover.
