Kyle Cady, a Ph.D. student in the lab successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis on Tuesday. He has been working on CRISPR systems and their role in controlling biofilm formation and phage resistance in P. aeruginosa. His outside examiner was Dr. Michael Terns from the University of Georgia, who works on CRIPSRs in archaea. Kyle will be heading off to a post-doc with Michael Laub at MIT in a month or so. Congrats Dr. Cady!

Laura Filkins, a second year Ph.D. student in the lab, was just appointed to the Molecular and Cellular Biology Training Grant. She was selected from an excellent pool of Ph.D. students here at Dartmouth. As an appointee on the MCB Training Grant, she will have the opportunity to host a visiting faculty seminar speaker and to participate in a variety of career development programs. Some big news here at Dartmouth. Our Medical School was just renamed the Audrey and Theodor Geisel School of Medicine in honor of one of Dartmouth's most famous alums, "Dr. Suess". Check out the story here.
