Two pieces of news today
 
First, Kelly McHugh (pictured), an undergraduate currently in the lab, was named a a James O. Freedman Presidential Scholar Research Assistant.  This award will help support Kelly's research during 2012-2013 academic year.  Molly Grimes, who will be joining the lab next fall, was also named a Presidential Scholar.



Second, I was recently quoted in an article on Health Day concerning the possible infections caused by pedicures give, by all things, from fish!

Chelsea Boyd, a Ph.D. student in the lab was selected to give a talk at this year's Boston Bacterial Meeting.  The BBM has grown from a small Boston-based conference to a large regional meeting, and in my opinion, one of the best annual microbiology meetings around.  Check out their website for meeting details.

The 5th Annual Integrative Biology Symposium at Dartmouth was held today with the focus on the human microbiome, a recent area of research in my lab.  I gave a talk presenting recent work from the lab, which included contributions from a number of members of our Lung Biology Center.  There was also a poster session, and one of the winners of a award for an outstanding poster was our very own Laura Filkins, a Ph.D. student in the lab - she won a new iPad!  She presented some of her recent work studying the microbiome of the lung of adult CF patients.  Congrats Laura.
