Guilia Orazi (top) and Laura Filkins (bottom) have been appointed to the Epithelial Cell Biology Training Grant.  They are working on polymicrobial communities relevant to cystic fibrosis and their interactions with airway cells.  These studies have grown out of long term collaborations with Bruce Stanton and Juliette Madan, two collaborators and colleagues here at Dartmouth.

About 2 weeks ago, the former members of the lab, organized by Thienny Mah and Sherry Kuchma, organized a surprise lab reunion at my house.  I was completely surprised, and completely blown away!  People from across the 15 year span of my lab came - from NY, PA, CA and many other states, from Canada, and one person came all the way from Japan (thanks Nobu!).  It was really a special evening to catch up with so many people.  I think my favorite part was watching people from different generations talking - connecting the lab across time.  I also received wonderful notes and pictures from people who could not make it.  I'm just posting a bunch a pictures below.  Perhaps you'll see some familiar faces!

Last Saturday was "Class Day" as Commencement at the Geisel School of Medicine is known.  Dae-Gon Ha, a PhD student in the lab (left-most in the top picture and receiving his hood in the bottom picture), recently defended and participated in the event.  The top picture shows two other students from our Microbiology and Molecular Pathogenesis Program (m2p2.org) who also graduated.  Kelly Shepardson (center) works with Robb Cramer and Angelyca Jackson works with Deb Hogan.

Dae-Gon is off to his post-doc with Tom Bernhardt at Harvard Medical School.  He starts his next step in training in August.

We've just returned from the 14th Annual O'Toole Lab Retreat,
held this year near the water in York Maine.
I've collected a pile of pictures from the retreat!

The house we rented has a great space for talks.  Each person in the lab 
presents their work for 2 hours - including work from the previous year
as well as planned studies.

 
 The weather was nice enough that we did some outside sessions.
 

On the first night, Yun, a post-doc in the lab (on the left)
made a fantastic dinner for the 14 of us!


 There was also some down time to enjoy the scenery.

Our second dinner was at a great lobster pound in nearby Kittery, Maine.

We have had three new people join the group.

Alan (top) and Giulia (middle) have very recently joined as new PhD students from the Molecular and Cellular Biology Graduate Program.

Wes (bottom), a recent graduate of Norwich University in Vermont, has joined the lab as our new research technician.
