In a recent collaborative report with collegaues here at Dartmouth, led by Juliette Madan (in the Dept. of Pediatrics) and Annie Hoen (in the Dept. of Epidemiology), we investigated the upper airway and gut microflora of infants and children with CF. This group fo children ranged up to almost 3 years of age. In this report, we demonstrate a link between the microflora in the gut and respiratory health. In particular, we show an association between gut microbiota and initial Pseudomonas aeruginosa colonization and onset of exacerbation. This exciting finding suggests that oral probiotics have the potential to impact airway health.

On Friday March 20th, a PhD student in the lab, Gary Heussler, travelled to North Haverhill Middle School in New Hampshire to give an interactive science presentation to 14 students part of an after school program for kids ranging from ages 10 to 14. The trip was organized through the Dartmouth Science Outreach office and the presentation was designed by Gary and included learning about and viewing different microbes under the microscope and witnessing Pseudomonas syringae ice nucleation. This is just one of many outreach experiences headed-up by Gary and other members of the lab to introduce younger students to science.

Dae-Gon Ha, a former PhD student in the lab, just landed a job at
Leerink Partners LLC, a healthcare investment bank based in Boston. Dae-Gon has had a long interest in working at the interface of science and business. As a PhD student, he participated in the
Tuck Bridge Program and did an independent study project with
Celdara Medical. Congratulations!
