As part of a year-long series in the Journal of Bacteriology, Classic Spotlights highlight papers published over the past 100 years in the journal. I wrote my fourth Classic Spotlight called "Classic Spotlight: Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, Starch Utilization, and the Birth of the Microbiome Era". This Spotlight highlights the work of Abigail Salyers and colleagues studying Bacteroides carbohydrate metabolism and developing genetic tools to study this important group of microbes. It could easily be argued that Salyers' work set the stage for the revolution in microbiome research. And this important work was published in JB. Check the Classic Spotlight out here.

Katherine Antosca (left) is a PhD student in the Graduate Program in Quantitative Biological Sciences (
QBS) at Dartmouth. She recently joined the group and I will serve as her co-Mentor with
Todd Mackenzie in the Data Science Department. Kathy's project will be to work with Todd, myself and Juliette Madan to analyze the link between the gut microbiota and health outcomes for infant and children with Cystic Fibrosis. We have
published similar studies on this topic over the past few years. Kathy has a strong background in computational biology and programming, and will work Todd and Juliette to apply a variety of statistical methods to analyze this long term (6 years and counting) longitudinal cohort of young people from New Hampshire with CF. I will contribute my expertise in microbiology. Welcome!

Nicolas Ambrosis is a PhD student visiting the lab this fall from the Universidad Nacional de La Plata in Argentina where he works with Julietta Fernandez and Federico Sisti on pathogenesis and biofilm formation in Bordetella. A recent collaborative paper from our groups can be found here. He is spending several months in the lab following up on this publication by studying the the LapD/LapG/LapA biofilm formation system. He is also exploring biofilm formation on human airway cells from Cystic Fibrosis patients.

I served as the editor for a special section of the Journal of Bacteriology that is dedicated to the 7th ASM Conference on Biofilms. I had the opportunity to write an introduction to this section - check it out here. This issue had a number of minireviews and primary research articles, as well as a meeting review and a cover (shown here).
