Shanice Webster (left) and Kathy Antosca both successfully defended their qualifying exam's yesterday - yes, two lab quals in one day! Shanice's qual focused on surface sensing and cyclic-di-GMP production during early biofilm formation, while Kathy's project centered on the development of new analytical tools to help model the metabolites produced by the gut microbiota of infants and children with CF.
Congratulations to them both!

Nicki Limoli, a post-doc in the lab (shown here), recently published a paper in mBio investigating the ability of mucoid Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains and Staphylococcus aureus to co-exist in the context of a cystic fibrosis co-infection model. Her paper was highlight by a very nice Commentary titled "Evolution of Bacterial Frenemies" by Sophie Darch, Carolyn Ibberson and Marvin Whiteley.  Check it out the Commentary here.

Jessie Scott, a PhD student in the lab, and Katie Price, a former O'Toole lab postdoc and current instructor at Dartmouth College, were two of the lead organizers for the Hanover Cystic Fibrosis Great Strides walk fundraiser on Saturday at the Storrs Pond Recreation Area.  There were six teams total participating including: the Lung Biology Center at Dartmouth, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and two family teams.  Together, the teams raised over $20K for CF research!  Check out the group picture on the left.

Kurt Dahlstrom is moving on from the lab after receiving his PhD and staying on for a year as a postdoc.  He is driving cross country to California, where he will start his postdoc with Dianne Newman at Cal Tech.  We wish Kurt all the best as he starts the next stage in his journey.
