Giulia Orazi, a PhD student in the lab, recently published a paper in mBio describing how co-culture with Pseudomonas aeruginosa renders Staphylococcus aureus much more resistant to the front-line antibiotic vancomycin (an increase in viability of ~2-logs).  A mixed culture of P. aeruginosa (green) and S. aureus (ref) on human airway cells is shown here.  Giulia's work supports the hypothesis that sideophores and HQNO secreted by P. aeruginosa slows the growth of S. aureus, thereby rendering S. aureus more resistant to this cell-wall targeting antibiotic.  These data have important implication for designing therapeutics for complex infections based on single organism, in vivo testing assays.  It is difficult to predict how microbes in mixed infections may respond to treatments based on standard microdilution assays.
