Andrew O'Neill is a PhD student visiting from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. He works in the lab of Seamas Donnelly at Trinity. We have been collaborating with the Donnelly lab over the past several years, and I visited Trinity College this past September. Welcome Andrew!

Jarrod Smith, a PhD student in the lab, recently published a
paper that describes a new sub-family of Type 1 secretion systems that play a role in anchoring c-di-GMP-regulated, biofilm adhesins on the surface of the bacterial cell. Shown here is a model of how this works: a N-termal "retention module" prevents secretion of the adhesin. When the retention module is cleaved by the c-di-GMP regulated, periplasmic protease LapG, then the adhesin is released from the cell surface and biofilm formation is abrogated. This system is conserved across the proteobacteria, including Vibrio, Legionella and Bordetella.

The Dartmouth Lung Biology Group was awarded the Community Spirit Award at the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's Volunteer Appreciation Dinner for our Great Strides Kickoff Event last spring. The Lung Biology Team's Kickoff Event encouraged graduate students in Dartmouth Lung Biology labs to express their thesis in arts and crafts to be displayed at the Great Strides for Cystic Fibrosis walk and generated enthusiasm and team spirit for the walk. The Great Strides Event, with participants from Dartmouth and the local community, raised over $20,000 for CF research. The event was organized by Jessie Scott and Katie Price, members of Dartmouth's Lung Biology Center.
